Novel Sustainable Masonry from Ancient Construction Techniques by Reusing Waste Modern Tiles

The recycling and reuse of wastes, especially Construction Waste (CW), is a fundamental way for sustainability. act reusing not modern practice; as early in Ancient Rome even more during the Middle Ages, materials were already being taken from existing buildings order to them different ways. Starting these general considerations taking inspiration specific construction techniques found some Roman Romanesque masonries made by unbroken tiles tile fragments, two novel sustainable masonry constructive are proposed here. They composed U-shaped their fragments so use CW. Monotonic cyclic compression tests performed determine main mechanical characteristics, such compressive strength, Young’s modulus, failure mode, first attempt at establishing possible sector sought. A comparison with literature values other similar was also performed. It results that both wall typologies showed satisfactory properties (i.e., strengths range 1.28 ÷ 2.27 MPa), provided restricted constructions moderate dimensions.
